Vern Naffier, born in 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a retired Lutheran pastor. For the past eight years he has been teaching as an adjunct faculty member in the Religion and Philosophy Department of Grand View College in Des Moines. He holds B.S., M.Div, S.T.M. and MA of Theology degrees.

He and his wife Joyce were married in 1961 and are the parents of two daughters and one son and grandparents of four grandsons. From 1964 until his retirement Vern served several Iowa congregations. During the 1980s he and Joyce served as missionaries in South America. Throughout that time Vern also worked as a project representative for the Lutheran Church in America in the Caribbean and parts of South America. In the early 1990s he served on the Texas-Mexican border as pastor of an Hispanic congregation.

He and Joyce are now active members of Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines. In the course of his career Vern has chaired several church and community organizations and continues to be politically active.

Phyllis was born and lived in Indianapolis until 2003 when Avivausa Life Insurance transferred her to Des Moines. 2003 was a big year as it was also the year She and Marla Stevens, definitely her better half, got married in Canada (some day the US will catch up). Phyllis works with Equality Iowa and the World Can Not Wait Committee.


Diane Krell

Diane was born in Wynne, Arkansas. She has a B.S. degree in Microbiology from Louisiana State University. She has worked as a research assistant at Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Virology Houston, Texas and The Dow’s Institute for Dental Research, University of Iowa, College of Dentistry, Iowa City, Iowa. She also has sold real estate, while living in Iowa City.

She moved to Des Moines in 1989 with her husband, Keith, who is an endodontist in West Des Moines. They have been married for 35 years and have two adult children and three grandchildren.

Currently, Diane is involved in community activism for peace and justice issues and is Co-President of the local branch of The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. She has been an active member of the Peace Committee at Plymouth Congregational Church UCC for 17 years.

A native Iowan, Johanna moved to Des Moines in 2004 after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa. At UNI, she studied Health Promotion and has been working to promote wellness and preventative healthcare for the past three years.

Leslie was born in Des Moines, Iowa. Her family moved to Miami, FL in 1963 where she spent most of her life in the South Florida area. It was her Midwest roots and values that drew her back to raise and educate her son. She has been married 20 years and has a degree in journalism. Leslie is  self-employed. She is a member of Moveon.org and Concerned Democrats of Polk County. She also worked for the Democratic Headquarters during the 2004 election campaign season.

Ione G. Shadduck, retired Attorney, is a member of the Iowa Bar Association, Co-chair of the Church and Society Committee of Grace United Methodist Church, Co-chair of the Commission on the Status and Role of Women for the Iowa Methodist Conference, member of Moveon.org, member of Des Moines Progressives, has been employed at the Iowa Civil Rights Commission for 12 years, a member of the Sierra Club, former candidate for the Iowa Legislature, and active “letter to the Editor” writer.

Forrest Determann

Forrest is originally from Clinton, Iowa. He moved to Des Moines in 2004 shortly after graduating from Iowa State University. He is a former Field Manager and Canvasser for the Fund for Public Interest Research where he canvassed for Iowa PIRG, The Sierra Club, and the Human Rights Campaign.
